5.50pm, 6.50pm & 7.50pm, Animal Hunts and Acrobats in the Later Roman Arena with Amelia Brown
During the later Roman Empire gladiators performed with wild animals as often as with other men, putting on staged hunts with wild or trained animals, and performing in acrobatic and athletic spectacles in the arena. These shows attracted huge crowds, and made many of the performers famous. Patrons even competed to obtain the most exotic animals possible. This talk is illustrated with the ancient mosaics, paintings, ivories and arena buildings which help to reconstruct these shows.
