Silver Eye presents a selection of LaToya Ruby Frazier's seminal series The Notion of Family in her first solo exhibition in Pittsburgh. Frazier's images explore the painful effects of decades of industrial decline, poverty, and systemic racism in her hometown of Braddock, PA. A working class town situated on the bank of the Monongahela River, Braddock's economy had been rooted in industry since Andrew Carnegie built the Edgar Thomson Steel Works in 1873. A child of the 80s and 90s, Frazier grew up when most of the steel industry had left the region and the War on Drugs decimated her community. Frazier came to use photography and art as a way to question inequality and reclaim history.

Join us for our Unblurred Gallery Opening, Collage City: Memory, Experience, and Depicting Dreams. This November showcase is an interactive exhibition that explores the spaces of our dreams. Based on the Dream Diary collages by artist-architect Annie Wang, Collage City will invite visitors to an experience at the intersection of architecture, visual arts, music, literature, and psychology. During the month of November, architects and artists will interpret visitor's dreams live in the gallery and lead workshops that invite visitors to see the spaces in their dreams come to life. The public is also invited to collaborate on a large-scale dream collage that will break down the barriers between dreamer and interpreter, artist and visitor.

Put a pin into the map and tell us about a place in Pittsburgh that you remember. Whether it's a café or church that has shuttered its doors, a mural that's been painted over, or a playground that became an office building we want to hear it all. Volunteers will be on-hand conducting brief interviews and taking down your story for the Unlandmarks project. The completed Unlandmarks map will be able to give directions using these long-ago landmarks!
*CNF is located just off Penn Avenue, between S. Evaline and Winebiddle.

This First Friday, we will remember Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez and all who have died at the hands of our country's xenophobic and racist policies. Jose Antonio was a 16 year old boy who was shot 10 times by Border Patrol agents in 2012. The first 2 times were in the head, and the other 8 were while he was lying dead on the ground. Dia De Los Muertos is a celebration of those who have passed on. THIS NOVEMBER 3RD, we say, Jose Vive! (Jose Lives)! We say, La Lucha Sigue (The Struggle Continues). We will drink, we will DANCE, and we will honor and celebrate our lives for the sacredness that they are. Full menu will be posted on this event as updated. We will have a pop-up restaurant, plenty of space to sit and eat, live music, drinking, dancing, and more celebrating. Mayday Marching Band will perform, along with other dancing bands and DJs. All are welcomed to sit and eat with us on the first floor, or dance with us on the dancefloor at the second floor! There will be a donation-based bar, a dancefloor, hot food, hot beverages (cold ones too!), and most importantly, our alter and prayer flags. The altar should be decorated with flowers, candles, and pictures of loved ones. Please bring anything else you want to add. Traditionally, drinks can also be placed in the altar to quench the thirst of our loved ones after their long journey back home. No racism, sexism, xenophobia, colorism, homophobia, fatphobia, transphobia, ableism, islamaphobia, or any other form of dangerous hate will be tolerated. ** Net proceeds go towards sending immigrant families, DACA youth, and allies to protest the border wall, and reunite with Jose Antonio's family from November 9-13th. ** If you can't make it, please contact Christina Acuna Castillo at 516-510-6042 if you'd like to donate. Thank you ♥"
