Kino Maunula: Pohjoinen intohimo

This autumn, the big screen of Metsäpurosali Hall is filled with a diverse selection of Finnish documentary films that offer new perspectives on people and the world around us. Best of all, we have managed to get the film directors to attend the screenings in person! 
 

Markku Heikkinen, the director and screenwriter of the documentary The Arctic Circle of Lust, has a conversation with film history expert PhD Harri Kilpi following the screening. The audience is invited to take part in the discussion.

A married couple of potato farmers from the north are learning the rules of a new relationship and discovering how to live with different sexual orientations and needs that test the boundaries of love. 
 
The potato-farming couple’s new relationship is based on openness and honesty. Petri, a man in his fifties who has come to terms with his bisexuality, is learning to be true to himself and honest with his partner. For Anu, Petri’s hopes of realising his own passion raise new questions about her own hopes and expectations within their relationship. Beneath the desolate landscapes of the North lies a world of men that they have tried to keep hidden not only from their spouses and the surrounding community, but also, to some extent, from themselves.
