Nanna Susi: piano piano - paintings 2026

The journey is more important than the destination. My painting cycles span different eras and journeys through life.

In creating these latest paintings, I have reflected especially on the importance of the journey – and on the simple act of being present in the moment. Piano piano means “slowly, slowly”: slowing down and embracing stillness.

Piano piano is like a peacefully turning perpetual-motion machine, unfolding one moment after another.

For me, the guiding idea behind piano piano and the paintings in this exhibition has been to savour life, to enjoy simply being, and to engage in a kind of tranquil stretching of both thought and feeling.

As I have painted, piano piano has become a new landscape for me, one in which I have found myself dreaming new dreams. The paintings are partly inspired by my travels in Japan in early 2026.

In my painting process, piano piano has come to signify a journey between what is seen and what is still emerging.

It has been a welcome and peaceful respite from life’s endless marathon, and it will remain a dear friend for the rest of my life.

Most of the paintings in this exhibition feature sunrises, sunsets, and clouds that seem to take the shape of thoughts. In all their simplicity."
