Sustainable Systems Seminar Lunch Series - From Reliability to Resilience: Risk-Informed Asset Management for the Energy Transition
This week's speaker is:
Lina Bertling Tjernberg, Visiting Professor, Stanford University
"From Reliability to Resilience: Risk-Informed Asset Management for the Energy Transition"
Abstract:
The transition towards sustainable and increasingly electrified energy systems calls for new approaches to reliability, resilience, and the management of critical infrastructure. Drawing on more than two decades of research and practical applications, this seminar will highlight advances in reliability-centered asset management, probabilistic risk assessment, and predictive maintenance, including their implementation in the power industry. Building on these foundations, the seminar will discuss how reliability and risk-informed decision-making can contribute to the development of future sustainable power grids, with perspectives from the GreenGrids research vision.
Bio:
Lina Bertling Tjernberg is a Professor in Power Grid Technology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, and currently a Visiting Professor in the Department of Energy Science & Engineering at Stanford University, supported by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF). Her research focuses on power system reliability, risk-informed asset management, and predictive maintenance, bridging methodological developments with practical applications in the energy industry. She is an IEEE Fellow (Class of 2026), a Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), and the author of more than 150 scientific publications and the book Infrastructure Asset Management with Power System Applications (2018). She previously held a leadership position at the Swedish national transmission system operator, Svenska kraftnät, and served as Director of the KTH Energy Platform from 2018 to 2024.
The topics of this seminar are broad but typically fall under technologies’ scaling potential and impact on (the system of) people, the environment and the economy. A particular focus is placed on the interaction potential of technologies with the energy, water, and material systems. Our goal is to create an intimate, collaborative space for students, postdocs, scientists, and PIs within Stanford across micro-level (material and technology) to macro-level (system) interests. These seminars will provide an opportunity to disseminate insights from your studies, connect with fellow researchers, and strengthen bonds across the community.
